WHY SPRINGHOUSE FINANCIAL?

What is a spring house?

The spring house was essential to life on any farm. Built over a spring, often below grade and against a hill, it used the soil surrounding the building as insulation. The water temperature of a typical spring is usually around 50 degrees F, allowing a spring house to provide a primitive level of refrigeration. In colonial times milk, butter, and cheese were stored in metal containers and placed in the water to keep the contents cool. One of the two farmhouses I grew up in had a spring house. Of course, we had refrigeration, but would use the spring house to store watermelons and other large items. I remember stepping into the spring house and enjoying the coolness it offered on a hot summer day, loving the accompanying smell of water and rock.
